Why Cycling Kicks A_ _!

If I could summarize why cycling is such a great sport, I’d say look at this icon of the sport for answers. In what other sport can you win the National TT Title at AGE 51? With cycling, you get out of it what you put into it….

Jeannie Longo won her 57th national title at the French national championships on Thursday, decisively winning the women’s time trial event for the third successive year. The 51-year-old Longo covered the 24.7-kilometer course in Chantonnay a full 1:19 faster than two-time national champion Edwige Pitel, 43. Former national road champion Christel Ferrier-Bruneau, 30, finished third at 1:45.

This story plays out for me every spring when we go to Naples, FL and I ride in the daily 7:00 AM hammerfest. I consistently have my arse handed to me by guys who are 20years my elder. AWESOME!!!

New for 2011 The Oltre (see more pics at Italian Cycling Journal) comes with Campy Super Record. Just knowing that she is out there and some day soon she will be mine makes this moment one of the happiest of my life! The joy of Bianchi ownership!!

Something old…

A 1964 Bianchi Pista… the essence of cycling. No gears or brakes, straight up steel, just you, the bike, the road!! Just knowing that she is out there and will probably never be mine makes this moment one of the saddest days of my life! The envy of someone elses Bianchi ownership!

Sunday 6/20 Group Ride

We’ll be doing a relatively mellow, albiet longer (50 miles), group ride tomorrow. Ride leaves from the shop at 9:30 AM sharp. Marilyn and I will be doing this together in preparation for next weekends MS 150. So, everyone is welcome to join!

East Canyon part duex

One of our good friends and shop partons made it up to Big Mountain summit in East Canyon this past weekend. Here’s the low down in his own words:

Hi, Cyclesmith Team!

I just wanted to tell you the gate to East Canyon / Big Mountain is open to cars as of at least this past Sunday. My car-free dreams have been officially burst.

The road is in surprisingly great condition both up and down. Road crews made some patches recently, but did a nice job sweeping away the excess. There was only one switchback (the last one from the summit) with any noticeable rocks and gravel on the road. Overall, there’s very little debris to concern one’s self with during the fun, fast descent. I’d like to say that it’s dry with no sign of any snow, but I think that might be a white lie.

Thanks for the last minute tune on Saturday!

At the Sugar House crit….

Mens 35+ B’s Group:

3rd – Chris Pullos4th – Chris ColganAt the Wilmington Grand Prix (NRC race)

Mens Cat 3 – 6th place! (Out of 80+) – Carl MajorsWhere is Wilmington you ask? Somewhere in Delaware (Apparently it’s one of the United States, but somewhere East of the Mississippi

river.) Carl beat at least 73 bad ass East Coast crit riders for 6th place. Way to represent!

FYI - Chip Seal Work on Emigration Canyon

FYI on the below information:

Road Construction Ahead

Salt Lake County Public Works Operations will be performing a chip seal
on Emigration Canyon Road and a portion of Wasatch Boulevard in June 2010.
A chip seal consists of oil spayed on the road followed immediately by
spreading and rolling rock chips into the surface. The road is swept
each day for a week to pick up loose rock chips. At the end of the week, a
fog seal will be applied to seal the rock chips in place.

Please see the schedule below.

Due to the loose rocks, the speed limit through the project area will be
reduced to 15 mph from the start date through the date of the fog seal.

In Emigration Canyon, one lane will be closed for construction, so
significant traffic delays are excepted. Bikes are not recommended
during the week of construction.

Mountain Bike Ride Tonight…

Impromptu mountain bike ride tonight starting at the city creek trail head (by the little pond) at 5:00.

We will head up City Creek to Dry Creek then home….come on out and play.
